NYC is buzzing as the Knicks won their first playoff series in ten years, and New Yorkers are hungrier than ever to win. NYC Chefs are coming in hot with a full court press of bold flavors and innovative ideas, while hitting three-pointers with every dish served. This week’s Must-Eats are nothing short of a slam dunk featuring an eating extravaganza in The Bronx, a 100 year-old lamb recipe cookout, a star-studded barbecue competition, and more.
As always, this article is just a small taste of the pop-ups and drops in the 8it app. Hit the green button below each dish to access 8it and get all the deets.
Bronx Night Market
Fordham Heights // 4.29
A curated selection of local Bronx and NYC-based food vendors will descend upon Fordham Plaza this Saturday for the Bronx Night Market, which actually takes place during the day time. When it comes to food, Manhattan and Brooklyn get all the attention and Queens is a dark horse lurking in the shadows, but The Bronx deserves its flowers every bit as much. Choosing a favorite borough in which to eat is like choosing a favorite member of the Knicks’ backcourt; they all bring something different to the table, and you can’t really go wrong with any of them. In this analogy, it seems fitting to compare food from The Bronx to Josh Hart; a seasoned veteran, one you can rely on, an ‘X-factor’ if you will. The prowess of The Bronx’s food scene will be on full display, as Perros Locos, Tacos El Guero, and Downeast Lobstah headline this month’s lineup, the first of 2023. Beaucoup Fish Dinner
Upper West Side // 5.1 & 5.2
Chef Nancy Nguyen of Eleven Madison Park is popping up at Just Pho You for a 7 Course Vietnamese Fish Dinner on Monday. However you like your fish cooked, this dinner will have you covered. There will be a crudo, whole crispy fish, fish summer rolls, tamarind fish soup, caramelized catfish, and a fish rice porridge. Beaucoup serves some of the city’s most outstanding Vietnamese food, but its pop-ups are elusive. Any opportunity to try Chef Nancy’s food should be taken full advantage of, especially this seven-game series of you vs. fish. Tap the fish below for all the info.
Foundation BBQ Benefit
Astoria // 4.29
Just days after Brisket King took Astoria by storm, Pig Beach is back with another banger. A star-studded lineup of more than 25 barbecue phenoms including Big Papa Smoke ‘Em Mario Chape, Bret Lunsford of Blue Smoke, and Billy Durney of Hometown BBQ will be slinging their best at Pig Beach for the Jeff Michner Foundation BBQ Benefit this Saturday. The event will be hosted by The Food Network’s Michael Symon, a James Beard Award-winner. Judges with clipboards and trucker hats will fill the yard as pitmasters compete for various awards. Chile Con Miel
Bushwick // 4.30
Kitchens get stuffy over long NYC winters and it’s only right for chefs to migrate outdoors once the weather starts edging above fifty degrees. Chef Tony Ortiz will be ringing in the outdoor cooking season in style at Honey’s this Sunday. A 100 year-old lamb birria recipe will be cooked over fire and paired with hand-pressed corn tortillas, plus crispy artichokes, and a Mexican Caesar Salad. Open fire cooking is about as rare as a winning basketball team in NYC, but now lightning is striking twice and this is an opportunity you won’t want to miss. Tap the fire below for all the info.
Down & Derby High/Low Pop-Up
Carroll Gardens
Pearl Street Caviar and Gotham Burger Social Club teamed up for the first High/Low Burgers & Caviar Pop-Up on April 1, and if you thought that was just an April fool’s hoax, you missed out on one for the ages. But redemption is within reach, as the second Burgers & Caviar: the Kentucky Derby Edition, is coming back to Pearl Street next Saturday. Tickets are available on 8it, loaded with perks like a double Gotham Smash Burger, 12 grams of caviar, the now infamous caviar grilled cheese, tons more snacks, and a five-hour open bar featuring Knob Creek Whiskey, Velvet Llama Cocktails, Charles Heidsieck Champagne, and more. Derby day is a great excuse to drink and get fancy, and there’s no better way to do it. Tap the horse below for all the info.
