8.18 Drop Digest: NYC’s Running Tab of Food Pop-Ups, Dish Drops & Collabs
An end-of-summer crescendo of pop-ups, dish drops, and collabs is upon us. The city is buzzing with limited-dishin’ action and if you’re not in these streets like we are, you’re gonna miss out. But have no fear…we’ve got your back (and your stomach). This week, we’re blessed with pasta in a pita, the Maybach of fried chicken, a healthy doughnut 🤔, and more! The 8it Drop Digest is a taste of what you can discover in the Pop-Ups & Drops category on the 8it app.
Spaghetti Bolognese Pita
Miznon at The Hugh
What’s the drop?
Miznon, a global chain selling Mediterranean street food draws inspiration from the cuisine of each city they are based in and wraps it into a pita. Bolognese Sauce of course originates from Bologna, Italy, but like most things, we do it pretty well here in New York too, don’t we?
Why should you go?
Can anything go in a pita? Yes seems to be the answer. Does this make consuming one of one of the world’s most iconic pasta dishes easier? Perhaps. It’s time we find out! Press the green button below to find out when and where it’s available.
Sari-Salo Market
Moto Spirits Distillery
What’s the drop?
If you live in Bushwick and have a window, you’ve probably smelled the pork skewers and calamansi ribs from Patikim. The smoky but bright aromas billowing from their grill have a hypnotic effect on everyone within a half-mile radius. Chef Erika Costa, the force behind the Filipinx food pop-up has additionally created a platform for other businesses to join the pop-up game. This edition of Sari-Salo Market will feature cakes from Beabingka, puto from Pandayo, brioche buns with ube, mango, and guava from PH Dough, and much more.
Why you should go?
Patikim will be debuting a new menu item this week and their lines have the kind of growth potential that your friend’s tech startup wishes it had. Have that friend wait in line for the barbecue while you shop for delicious baked goods. Click the green button below for time and location and get there early!
Jase’s BBQ Pop-Up
Noble Savage Brewing Company
What’s the drop?
Jase’s BBQ has been infusing Caribbean flavors into their barbecue since 2017. This weekend’s menu will feature Prime Jerk Brisket, Pork Ribs, Pulled Jerk Pork, Jerk style wings, Mac n cheese, Coleslaw, and Honey Cornbread.
Why should you go?
Jase’s BBQ suggests you come to try their ribs. “I get excited for people to try my ribs. It’s not your typical ribs. It’s got a lil sweet and a lil heat.” Access the time and location of this pop-up via the green button below.
ELAVI Chocolate Cashew Butter Doughnut
The Doughnut Project
What’s the drop?
The Doughnut Project is never shy of a collab and Michelle Razavi, co-owner of ELAVI loves to see their product enter new realms. “Originally we developed these cashew butter packs to be enjoyed on their own, but we just love seeing people come up with inventive ways to integrate them into recipes,” she said. “We’re huge donut fans so this is a literal dream!” Along with ELAVI Chocolate Cashew Butter, the doughnut has banana cream filling, a whipped cream topping, chocolate cashew butter drizzle, and cashew brittle garnish.
Why should you go?
This collab features two woman-owned small businesses making groundbreaking moves. They said it couldn’t be done, but ELAVI’s nut butters make this doughnut guilt-free. “They’re perfect for confectionary collaborations or replacing syrups/fillings with a healthier, low sugar, plant-based alternative,” said Razavi. “Plus, they’re loaded with superfoods so we can add a healthy touch to your favorite desserts!” All right fine, it’s drizzled onto an otherwise decadent doughnut but we’re gonna put emphasis on the healthy touch. Click the green button below to find out where and when to get this masterpiece.
The Noortwyck x Pecking House The Noortwyck
What’s the drop? Chef Eric Huang left Eleven Madison Park where he was sous chef in January 2020 to open his own restaurant, Pecking House, which began as a fried chicken pop-up and delivery service out of his family’s restaurant, Peking House. He added a “C” which of course stands for chicken. Oh, and what’s that thing chickens do with their beaks? Pecking House became so popular that there was once an 8 week wait list according to The New York Post. It earned Eater’s 2021 Best Pandemic Popup award and now has its own location. For this dinner, Huang will collab with another EMP alum Andrew Quinn, Chef and Co-Owner of The Noortwyck. “Andy and I worked together at EMP for many years, he was my sous chef when I first started and we became really good friends,” said Huang. “We're the first two monkeys into space out of our peer group, opening our own things, so it seemed natural to team up. We hope it becomes a really collaborative atmosphere with all our former colleagues as we build restaurants in NYC.” Chef Huang is actively embodying what pop-ups are all about. Chefs seeking independence and bringing their colleagues along with them.
Why should you go? Chef Huang applies the same precision to cooking fried chicken as he did with elaborate tasting menus during his fine dining career. “It's hard to compare tasting menus vs fried chicken, but I like to think it's a relaxation of stringent fine dining culture while retaining a lot of the precision and attention to detail. This was all a bit of an accident for me but I've come to really enjoy how approachable and fun the food is,” he said. Expect the kind of crunch and juiciness that will have you pecking at the bones of Chef Huang’s fried chicken. Tap in via the green button below.
